Electrical Safety with Irons and Machines

A sewing room concentrates three things that fire investigators do not like seeing together: appliances that get hot enough to scorch fabric, a tangle of cords that get stepped on and pinched, and shelves of highly combustible material. Irons in particular are among the highest draw appliances in a domestic setting, frequently pulling well over a kilowatt while running.
The scale of residential electrical fire risk is documented. US Fire Administration data for 2023 records an estimated 23,700 residential building electrical malfunction fires, causing 305 deaths, 800 injuries and just over 1.5 billion dollars in loss, with dollar losses up 28 percent across the decade to 2023. Electrical malfunction is not an exotic cause; it is a routine one.
Cord condition
Iron cords take more abuse than almost any other appliance lead. They are dragged, twisted, folded around a hot soleplate and flexed at the strain relief thousands of times. Insulation cracks where the cord meets the plug and where it meets the appliance body, and the damage is often hidden until you flex it.
Inspect cords with the appliance unplugged. Run the whole length through your hand looking for cracking, stiffening, discolouration, flattening, exposed conductor or heat damage. Check the plug for scorching on the pins and for a body that feels loose or warm after use. US Fire Administration guidance states that any cord that is cracked, damaged or loose should be replaced, that major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord, and that cords should be kept away from places where they can be damaged or pinched such as under a carpet or rug.
A damaged cord is not a repair project. Taping over cracked insulation does not restore it. Retire the appliance from use and have it dealt with properly.
Extension leads and power strips
Sewing rooms tend to accumulate a power strip feeding a machine, an overlocker, an iron, a lamp and a radio, all from one wall outlet. The machines and lamps draw very little. The iron does not, and it is the iron that turns a convenient strip into an overloaded one. The same USFA guidance is clear that outlets should not be overloaded, that power strips need internal overload protection, and that worn or old extension cords should be replaced.
Practical points that follow: give a high draw appliance such as an iron or a heat press its own wall outlet. Do not daisy chain power strips. Do not run leads under rugs, through doorways or across walkways where they will be crushed and where they are also a trip hazard next to a hot appliance. If a plug fits loosely in a socket, the socket needs replacing.
Unattended irons
Many modern irons have an automatic shutoff that cuts power after a period of inactivity, often shorter when the iron is resting on its soleplate than when upright. This is a useful backstop and a poor primary control. Shutoff mechanisms fail, some irons do not have them, and the interval can be long enough to matter with fabric underneath.
- Treat the iron as switched on until it is unplugged, and unplug it when you leave the room.
- Rest it on a stable heat resistant surface, not balanced on a pressing ham, a stack of fabric or the edge of a board.
- Give it clear space above and around it, away from curtains, patterns, interfacing and thread.
- Let it cool fully before storing, and never wrap the cord around a hot soleplate.
- Fit and test smoke alarms on every level, and keep the sewing room's escape route clear.
Unplugging and storing cords
Pull the plug, not the cord. Yanking on a lead damages the conductor and the strain relief at exactly the point most likely to fail. When storing, coil cords loosely in wide loops rather than winding them tightly around the appliance body, because tight repeated bends fatigue the copper strands inside.
Where the line is

Do not attempt to repair appliance cords, rewire plugs beyond what you are competent and permitted to do in your jurisdiction, replace outlets, or investigate a circuit that trips repeatedly. Warm outlets, buzzing, burning smells, flickering lights, repeated breaker trips and scorch marks are signs to stop using the circuit and call a qualified electrician. If an appliance shows any sign of overheating or fire, treat it as an emergency and contact the fire service.
