Thread Weights Explained: Matching Weight to the Stitch

Thread weight is one of the most misread numbers in sewing, mostly because it runs backwards: the higher the number, the finer the thread. A 40 weight is the everyday embroidery and general standard, a 50 or 60 disappears into piecing seams so they press flat, and a heavier 12 or 30 sits up on the surface for topstitching and hand-look quilting. The weight changes how much thread fills a space and how visible the stitch is.

Because the number is inverted, it pays to think in terms of the job. Fine thread for seams you never want to see, medium for embroidery and general sewing, heavy where you actually want the stitch to show. Tension and needle size follow from there, since a heavier thread needs a bigger eye to pass through cleanly.
