Why Your Machine Is Skipping Stitches

A skipped stitch is a specific mechanical event: the needle went down and came back up, but the hook failed to catch the loop of upper thread, so no interlock was formed. Nothing was tangled and nothing broke. One stitch simply did not happen.

The loop is the fragile part of the process. As the original lockstitch patent describes, the needle descends and then withdraws slightly, leaving the thread in a loop or slack state that a second thread mechanism must pass through. If that loop is small, late, or in the wrong place, there is nothing for the hook to catch.

That framing matters because it tells you where to look. Anything that stops the loop forming properly, or stops the hook meeting it at the right moment, produces this fault. Work the causes in order of likelihood.

Step one: the needle

The needle is the cause in the large majority of cases, and replacing it costs almost nothing. Fit a new needle before investigating anything else.

A blunt needle pushes fabric down instead of piercing it cleanly, which delays and distorts the loop. A bent needle, often bent so slightly you cannot see it, arrives at the wrong position relative to the hook point. Needles bend from sewing over pins, from pulling fabric while sewing, and from striking the throat plate.

Needle type matters as much as condition. Point geometry is a real engineering variable. A review of sewing damage and defects in garments found that reducing faults requires fibre, yarn, fabric construction, thread specification, needle selection and machine settings to be assessed together, with no single universal fix. A sharp point is designed to separate the yarns of a woven fabric. A ball point is rounded so that it pushes knit loops aside rather than piercing them, and a stretch needle combines a modified point with a deeper scarf specifically to help the hook find the loop in elastic fabrics.

Step two: needle installation

Two installation errors produce skipped stitches reliably. First, the needle not pushed fully up into the clamp. If it sits even half a millimetre low, the eye passes the hook point at the wrong height. Push it up until it stops, then tighten.

Second, the needle fitted the wrong way round. Domestic needles have a flat side on the shank that must face a specific direction, on most machines to the back. Rotated needles put the scarf, the small hollow above the eye that lets the hook come close, on the wrong side entirely.

Also confirm the needle system is right for your machine. Domestic machines almost all take 130/705H needles. Industrial needles look similar and are not interchangeable.

Step three: the thread path

Rethread completely, with the presser foot raised so the tension discs are open. Upper thread that is not seated in the discs, or has jumped out of the take-up lever, changes the slack available at the moment the loop should form.

Also check that thread is feeding smoothly off the spool. A nick on a spool edge, a thread caught under the spool cap, or an old thread that has become dry and brittle can all cause intermittent drag, which reads as intermittent skipping.

Step four: the fabric and the foot

Skipping that only happens on certain fabrics is usually a fabric interaction rather than a machine fault.

  • Knits and stretch wovens: use a ball point or stretch needle. This single change resolves most knit skipping.
  • Lightweight or spongy fabric: the fabric is flagging, lifting with the needle on the upstroke so no loop forms. Increase presser foot pressure if adjustable, use a straight stitch throat plate and foot, and add a stabiliser or tissue paper layer.
  • Thick seam intersections: the foot tilts and the fabric is not held flat. Use a height shim behind the foot, or hand-walk the machine over the bulk.
  • Coated or laminated fabric: adhesive residue on the needle increases friction. Change needles more often and try a non-stick foot.

Step five: when it is genuinely timing

If a new correct needle, correctly installed, with a fully rethreaded machine, still skips across several different fabrics, the needle-to-hook relationship may have drifted. The hook point must pass the needle within a fraction of a millimetre, at a defined point in the needle's rise. Machines lose this after a hard needle strike, a jam that stalled the mechanism, or long wear.

This is a service job. Timing and hook clearance are set to tolerances measured in hundredths of a millimetre, they interact with feed and take-up motion, and adjusting one without the others usually makes things worse. It is also work done close to a needle and a driven mechanism, which is a further reason to hand it to a technician rather than experiment.

Before booking a service, do the cheap steps once more in order. It is genuinely common to fit a new needle, decide that was not it, and later find the replacement needle was also the wrong type for the fabric.
